Days This Long
This is a recording of the sadly short-lived Wooden Wand Trio at Al’s Bar in Lexington, KY on May 18, 2016. The performance served as an unofficial “farewell gig,” as it immediately preceded my move to Richmond, VA after seven years in Lexington.
The good vibes of the large audience of friends and acquaintances were strong and palpable onstage, and Cecilia, Josh, and I played beautifully as a result. My good friend Josh Doss opened the show with a typically great set of songs.
Though I felt (and feel) that this particular group had rare chemistry and great potential, this lineup would perform only one more show before quietly and unofficially disbanding. The distance of 500 miles--in addition to many (positive) life changes--proved too great to maintain a potentially rigorous rehearsal and touring schedule.
I hadn’t actually listened to the recording of this show until very recently, but I do believe the recording captures some of what this band was capable of during that brief time. Listening to it now brings back very warm memories. As for those positive life changes I mentioned: Cecilia and Josh would be wed just a few weeks after playing this show, and remain happily married today. I like to think you can hear that in the music.
