about

This collection comprises a few things I recorded between June 6th and July 22nd, 2021.

A note on demos, here and elsewhere: unless I *really* mess something up, things like harmony vocals and guitars solos are first takes; what you hear is me kinda figuring it out in real time, to document the idea more than anything. I actually don’t even know why I add these things to demos. I guess, because I write so many songs, demos do often end up being final / definitive versions--though they are never intended as such--so they may as well sound as complete as I can make them. On that note, lyrics on demos are usually first drafts, which is why careful observers and longtime WW listeners might notice that when demos get re-recorded, the lyrics are often heavily revised. In other words: these ain't perfect.

The songs:

Vampire Pete
Not all vampires have fangs. Got a bit carried away with the stereo panning, as usual.

Bless This Mess
This song is almost 20 years old and has during that time gone through various iterations, but I’ve never been able to get a recording of it I’ve been satisfied with (including this one). Best version so far is the cover by Doc Feldman, found on his great EP Sundowning at the Station. I may re-record this for the expanded Brooklyn Blizzard LP coming in 2022 (stay tuned). Seems like it would fit. FUN FACT: People who like this song are often disappointed when I reveal that it was actually written not from the perspective of a heartbroken sad-sac but from that of a young athlete with a career-ending sports injury. Maybe I should stop telling people that (even though it's true).

Zero Sum (Anything That Moves)
The scene: hapless loser attends family event in his old hometown and immediately remembers why he left. Pure fiction, btw. Written with an eye toward recording with One Eleven Heavy but it took recording the demo to realize that the vibe’s all wrong. It happens that way sometimes.

My Chauffeur
A little pop tune about corporate hypocrisy (in the great tradition).

Miles Smiles
An elegy for a friend.

Love Me While I’m Alive
Leah unwittingly gave me this title when we were discussing the way certain artists are only appreciated after they are dead. I thought that was too heavy a theme (at least for right now) but I couldn’t let a great title go to waste, so I made it into a love song. Think it could benefit from an Everly Brothers-style arrangement if I re-record it at some point. Intro is four bars too long.

Everything here recorded and performed by JJT, with the exception of the fake drums by the ubiquitous Kyle, surely the most recorded drummer of all time at this point.

Hope you dig it.
