I try not to play favorites with my records (it's bad luck), but Second Attention was really good to me. I have great memories of recording it (it was the first of two albums I made in the beautiful city of San Francisco), it did well, and it seems to be a lot of people's favorite Wooden Wand album. It wouldn't have happened if not for Skygreen Leopards, who invited me to come out and record with them, and Slim Moon, who facilitated the whole thing through Kill Rock Stars. To this day, having the KRS logo on the back of one of my records is a career high point for me. The demos were made in two or three sittings in Knoxville, TN in 2005. (A few are lost - If I find them, I'll upload them as free downloads). I've also included songs that were slated to be recorded for the album, but, for whatever reason, weren't. These include "Xiao Li During Youth" (which also appears on People In A Position To Know's exhaustive 6xlp Wooden Wand Archives, Vol 3 box set), "Bones For Doctor Swah" (an alternate version of which appears on a 5RC compilation called The Sound The Hare Heard), and "When You're Dead To Your Girl" (which appears in 'noise remix' form on the Spring tour CD, available elsewhere on Bandcamp).

I was reading a lot of Carlos Castaneda as well as some Transcendentalist stuff, hence the title of the album and many lyrics that nod to self-culture, beginner's mind, and the philosophy of 'plain living and high thinking.' The full version of "War Star Days" (or at least the most 'full' version that currently exists) can be found on the Wooden Wand & The Omen Bones Band EP Horus Of The Horizon on Three Lobed. I performed the entire thing live once, all 25 verses or whatever the hell it was. Anyone have a bootleg?

Says Swans frontman and head of Young God Records Michael Gira, James Jackson Toth’s “got that picaresque quality that Dylan had in his heyday, wherein the shambolic narrator undergoes various travails and epiphanies—harrowing, bleak and darkly comical—in the course of a narrative, then leaves you mystified, both smiling and sad.” ... more
