about

I conceived the Dunza project in late 2019 as a means of not going berserk when tours and recording sessions began getting canceled. The idea was to create music based entirely on intuition and chance, without any predetermined parameters beyond some vague notion of creating something that intersected a lot of my musical interests beyond traditional songwriting.

By summer of 2020 I had four songs that didn’t seem to really fit into any particular niche, which I took as a good sign.

Still, something about the music wasn’t working for me. For fun, I decided to create “versions” of the four songs. As the pandemic trudged on, these radical deconstructions began to make a lot more sense to me than their corresponding vocal versions. Using the home studio less as a documentary tool than as a compositional means to an end, I began to hear these processes of fragmentation, disruption, and incompletion in the music as a reflection of my state of mind, and a reflection of the state of mind of many people I knew. It should also be said, more prosaically, that these new versions sounded to me far headier and more psychedelic, passing with flying colors the ever-important, ahem, lie detector test0))) to which I try to subject most of my work.

After a lot of tinkering and obsessing, I ultimately grew to strongly prefer these new, deconstructed mixes. In a hasty and quite possibly foolish decision, I deleted the original mixes entirely, retaining only their new, versioned mixes, in effect burning a symbolic bridge. I enjoyed the idea of creating a trail backward that led to nowhere; a decontextualized recollection of something that no longer exists (and--for the listener, anyway--never existed).

I hope you enjoy it.
