This is a recording of the lamentably short-lived Wooden Wand Trio at Al’s Bar in Lexington, KY on May 18, 2016. The performance served an unofficial “farewell gig,” as it immediately preceded my move to Richmond, VA after seven years in Lexington.
The good vibes of the large audience of friends and acquaintances were strong and palpable onstage, and Cecilia, Josh, and I played beautifully as result; it remains very high on my short list of all-time favorite WW shows. My good friend Josh Doss opened the show with a typically great set of songs.
Though I felt (and feel) that this particular group had rare chemistry and great potential, this lineup would perform only one show following this one before unofficially disbanding. The distance of 500 miles--in addition to many (positive) life changes--proved too great to maintain a rehearsal schedule.
I hadn’t actually listened to the recording of this show until very recently, but I do believe the recording captures some of what we were capable of during that short time. Listening to it now brings back very warm feelings. As for those positive life changes: Cecilia and Josh would be wed just a few weeks after playing this show, and remain happily married today.
